sunken city coastal border.jpg

“A century ago – nearly outside of living memory – one of those farthest places, where all Europe’s jetsam and hunger came up against the impossible wall of the ocean, something all fell apart. The hearsay is that the construction, the sealing over of the earth, the changes in water flow through the earth, all this sealed over, penetrating change was rejected – spat out, spat right into the sea. This city, it sank, is sinking, still, it is Sunken City.  The land slides slowly, then faster and faster, the people feel unwelcome – they flee. It all falls down, slides down, scrapes down. It’s still falling, today, impossibly slow.

This is you in a hundred years, and this is you a hundred years ago, too.

— From “Sunken City,” written for the catalog for Coastal/Border a project curated by Marabel Wasserman for the Angels Gate Cultural Center, part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA in 2017.

“Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.”
